BARRATT, Edward (DOyley).
Professional.
Born at Stockton-on-Tees, Durham. 21st April 1844.
Died at Kennington, Surrey, 27th February 1891.
By trade a plumber, his first engagement as a cricket professional was at Longsight, Manchester in 1870 and 1871, He played at Lords in 1872 and at Princes in 1873. In 1874 he was engaged at The Oval and in 1874 and 1875 played for his native Durham. Qualifying by residence for Surrey in 1876 he played for them 130 times between then and 1885. In all he played in 153 first-class matches. In about 1873 he moved from Durham and took up residence at 21 St.Georges Terrace, New Road, London.
A match was played for his benefit at The Oval, Surrey v Yorkshire, on 18th August 1887, and in January 1889 he became landlord of the Duchy Arms, Bowling Green Street, near The Oval, where he died of consumption.
The 1881 Census shows him as a 36 years old gas fitter, resident at 5 Bowling Green Street, Lambeth, Surrey, with his wife Mary, aged 33, from Somers Town, Middlesex, and their son Edward G. aged five who was born at Paddington. His unmarried brother, Henry, a brass finisher, aged 30, is also resident.
