LEESE, Joseph Francis.
Amateur.
Born at Chorlton, Manchester, Lancashire, 28th February 1845.
Died at Sutton Park, Guildford, Surrey, 29th July 1914.
The son of Joseph Leese, of Messrs. Kershaw, Leese & Co., cotton spinners and manufacturers, Stockport, he was educated firstly at the Universities of Halle and Dijon, going on to the University of London where he graduated B.A., later going up to St.John’s, Cambridge, to read law. He went into partnership with his two brothers cotton spinning at Fylde-road, Mill, Preston, but left in 1868 when he was called to the Bar at Inner Temple, taking silk in 1891. In 1868 he stood as a Liberal candidate at Preston in 1868 and in his election address stated “I am not the younger brother of a great lord, not the nominee of an influential country family; at best I am but a scion of the aristocracy of industry.” He failed to get elected ! he played in 24 first class matches forLancashire1865-81. He was defeated in the Accrington Division at the General Elections of 1886 and 1888 but was elected 1892 to 1909. He was appointed as Recorder of Manchester 1893-1914 and was knighted 1895 and made a baronet in 1908.
At the time of the Census 1881 he was living at Send Holme, Woking, Surrey, aged 36, a barrister in practice, with his wife Mary Constance aged 33, three sons, Vernon aged 11, Theodore aged 6 and Cecil M. aged 5 and a daughter, Constance aged 2. There is a tutor, a governess, a butler and a nurse, plus three domestic servants.
