Born at Thames Ditton, Surrey, 9th February 1859.
Died at Winchester, Hampshire, 17th February 1929.
The nephew of H.H.Stephenson (Surrey) and the brother of Frederick Hurrell Read (Surrey), he was educated at Overton, Hampshire. He made his first appearance in first-class cricket in 1880 and between then and 1895 took part in 380 first-class matches, 278 of them being for Surrey and 17 of them being Test Matches. He toured Australia in 1884/5, 1886/87, 1887/8 and 1891/2 and South Africa 1888/9. He gave up his place in the Surrey county side to take up an appointment with Sir Henry Tichbourne, at Tichbourne Park, near Alresford, Hampshire, and although he played with great success in minor matches for many years thereafter he could not be tempted back to the first-class game. He died at Winchester Hospital after a long illness.
At the time of the 1881 Census he was living at Churchfields, Thames Ditton, Surrey, unmarried, aged 23, a painter, with his widowed mother, Sarah aged 54, an annuitant. Also present are his unmarried brother Walter T. aged 30 a grocer and his unmarried sister Jemima, aged 16, together with his nephew Charles P. Ward, aged 8.
