Best Individual Test Bowling by Age
by Muhammad Asim

Anil Kumble’s analysis of 8 for 141 in the Sydney Test of the recently concluded four-match rubber against Australia was interestingly the best innings bowling by a bowler in the 34th year of his life. Kumble was 33 years & 79 days old at the end of Australia’s first innings, in which he achieved this feat, on the third day. Kumble thus bettered England’s Johnny Henry Wardle’s performance of 7 for 36 against South Africa at Cape Town in January 1957, as the previous best individual bowling by a bowler in his 34th year. Johnny’s exact age at tat time was 33 years and 359 days.

Curiously enough, Mushtaq Muhammad of Pakistan is the youngest ever cricketer to bowl a ball in Test cricket’s history. Mushtaq who was born on November 22, 1943 bowled his first ball on the first day of his debut against West Indies at Lawrence Gardens, Lahore on March 26, 1959. However, Mohammed Sharif of Bangladesh is the youngest ever cricketer to take a wicket. Sharif who was born on December 12, 1985 made his debut against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo on April 19, 2001. But he bowled his first ball and got his first scalp in Test cricket on the second day of his debut match at the age of 15 years and 129 days. His 2 for 108 in his second match at Harare also remains the best individual bowling by a bowler in his 16th year.

On the other end of the scale, England’s Wilfred Rhodes is the oldest cricketer to take a wicket at the age 52 years and 163 days. He is also the oldest to deliver a ball at the age of 52 years and 164 days. His 3 for 110 against West Indies at Bridgetown in January 1930 still remains as the best bowing by a player in his 53rd year (the oldest). The accompanying table lists best individual bowling figures for each age in Test cricket.
