Lancashire 1869-74

A middle order right-hand batsman and a right-arm fast bowler. He played regularly for the Bolton Cricket Club. Lillywhite's Annual for 1874 says that "with more confidence would be a valuable man to his county; bats in good form and drives well." 
His first match for the county was on the 24th to 26th June 1869 at Old Trafford against Sussex, when he scored 0 and 11 and took a catch. It was July 1873 before he was asked to play again and he accompanied the team to London, turning out against Surrey at The Oval and against Kent at Gravesend. In 1874 he played against Derbyshire at Chesterfield scoring 9 in his only innings. 
At the time of the 1881 Census he was at the York Hotel, 114 Newport Street, Bolton, of which his widowed mother Mahalah, aged 72 born at Bingley, Yorkshire, was the publican. He is unmarried aged 37, a draughtsman in an iron foundry. Also present are his two sisters Margaret M., unmarried aged 41, and Nancy Rawsthorn, widowed aged 49. There is one general servant and a resident bar maid.
