by Don Ambrose

Player:E Moorhouse

Lancashire 1873-75
Born 11.4.1851 Shawclough, Bacup.
Died 10.3.1927 Chorlton-cum-Medlock, Manchester.

A amateur middle order batsman and wicket-keeper. His club cricket was played for Haslingden.

In 1868 he played in two matches for the Gentlemen of Lancashire against the Gentlemen of Kent. In the first match at Old Trafford he went in last and scored 4 and 6 not out, E.J.Bousfield keeping wicket. Three weeks later at Gravesend he opened the innings and scored 2 and 49 and took one catch and made a stumping - he also bowled five overs without success.

On 10th and 11th July 1873 he made his debut for Lancashire against Kent at Gravesend making a pair. Three days later, at The Oval he scored 3 and 5 not out. It is not certain who keptwicket in these matches as the Rev. F.W.Wright made a stumping. It appears that the wicket-keeping duties were shared around during this season as in the two matches against Derbyshire, in which Moorhouse made three stumpings, both Wright and J.R.Hillkirk also made stumpings.

His last match was against Derbyshire at Old Trafford at the end of May 1875.

At the time of the 1881 Census he was living with his widower father, James aged 60, a commercial traveller in mill furnishing, at 21 Granton Street, Cheetham, Manchester, aged 29 unmarried born at Newchurch, a commercial traveller in kennel goods. Also present are his two unmarried brothers Thomas, aged 27 a tobacconist, and Joseph, aged 19 a trimming assistant, and his unmarried sister Emma, aged 22, the housekeeper.
