Match report: Lancs v Yorks in Twenty20 Cup 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Lancashire v Yorkshire

Summary

Nearly 15,000 spectators watched this 20/20 Roses encounter. The atmosphere was electric due to the volume of noise generated by the thousands of school children. Yorkshire won the toss and surprisingly elected to bat. Once again, the encounter was very one-sided - this time in Lancashire's favour. The visitors lost 3 wickets within the first 2 overs, and found themselves in the hopeless position of 28 for 5 in the 6th over (Many spectators missed all the action due to the size of the crowd and the traffic congestion outside Old Trafford). Yorkshire limped tamely pass the 100 mark in the final over, primarily due to a spirited 32 from Richard Blakey in the middle of Yorkshire's innings. Mal Loye and Stuart Law destroyed Yorkshire's bowling attack - racing along at in excess of 10 an over. (70 of 104 runs scored in boundaries).

Bowling Performance of the Day

Familiar names again - Chapple 2 for 13 from 4 overs and Martin 3 for 20 from 4 overs. The three support bowlers all returned tight figures (Hooper 0 for 17, Mahmood 1 for 22, and Wood 1 for 23).

Batting Performance of the Day

Mal Loye blasted 45 runs from 34 balls (4 x 4 & 3 x 6). He destroyed any feint hopes the visitors possessed when the innings started. His sweep shot for 6 was courtesy of exceptional timing. Stuart Law scored 29 runs from 18 balls (6 x 4). The opening partnership between Law and Loye reaped 62 runs in just over 36 deliveries.

Fielding Performance of the Day

Lancashire fielded much better than the previous 20/20 game. They were very keen to impress. The best catch was held by Warren Hegg to dismiss Blakey. His one-handed diving catch high to his right was superb - well worthy of a reply on the big screen!

Highlights of the Day

  • Mal Loye's sweep six to long leg.
  • Martin 2 wickets in 2 balls.
  • Schofield's catch to dismiss Lumb
  • Hegg's catch to dismiss Blakey
  • Watching Stuart Law hit 5 x 4 from one over bowled by Sidebottom.

Lowlights of the Day

  • The huge crowd did not seem to settle. Consequently, viewing the game was extremely difficult.
  • The excitement finished too soon due to the low scores involved (19.45).

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

Poor stewarding allowed vast numbers of spectators to run across the square and on the wicket during the interval - no lessons learnt from Tuesday then.
