Match report: Lancs v Derbys in Twenty20 Cup 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Lancashire v Derbyshire

Summary

Mix a large expectant crowd to the "Excitement" of 20/20 cricket. Add a dash of colour, some tacky music and a few fireworks. The result - fast and furious non stop entertainment which will encourage the "New" spectators to return to future cricket at Old Trafford. WRONG - based on this disgraceful performance, the children of the North West will spend their time and money elsewhere. Their parents will only return if it forms part of a punishment plan. The team played appallingly, and missed a huge "Marketing" opportunity. One can only hope that "Normal" service resumes once 20/20 competition is concluded. Lancashire lost the toss for the fourth consecutive time in 20/20 cricket. Momentarily the hosts lured everyone into a false sense of security by reaching 40 for 1 in the 7th over. What followed was truly disgusting - 9 wickets for 51 runs in just 10 overs. Only Chris Schofield 27, and Alec Swann 16 not out applied the slightest effort - 14,672 supporters v Yorkshire, 7,025 v Derbyshire. What price under 4,000 versus Durham?

Bowling Performance of the Day

Glen Chapple finished with 2 for 17 from 3 overs - both wickets were taken in his first over. All the remaining bowlers performed reasonably, but then again Derbyshire only required 4.6 per over from the out-set.

Batting Performance of the Day

Chris Schofield top scored with 27 runs (4 x 4). His first two boundaries were uncontrolled shots over the top of the wicket-keeper and through the vacant first slip region.

Fielding Performance of the Day

No outstanding performance - below standard with a number of fielding errors.

Highlight of the Day

The firework display at the end of the match - and that was very average.

Lowlight of the Day

Everything which involved the home side!

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

Nothing to report
