Match report: Som v Lancs in NCL 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Somerset v Lancashire

Summary

Lancashire maintained their excellent run of form in the NCL division two with a 24 run victory over Somerset at Taunton. Nearly 600 runs were scored from just 88 overs play, as the large crowd were treated to a runs feast. However, as Lancashire closed in on victory they were running behind with the speed at which they had bowled their overs. Unknown to most of the crowd, a 12 run penalty was about to be imposed on the visitors at the end of the 43rd over. Consequently, Somerset would only have required 12 runs from the last 12 balls with one wicket in hand. Thankfully, Glen Chapple captured the final wicket with just 1 ball to spare! Earlier in the day, Michael Burns the Somerset captain, won the toss and elected to field - a truly bizarre decision considering the sun was beating down on a beautiful track. Hegg could hardly contain himself as Burns announced his intention - Hegg has failed to win any of the 5 day/night tosses, but Lancashire won 4 of the games! Lancashire posted an imposing total (310 for 7) a new record. Somerset struggled to 87 for 5 in the 15th over due to excellent bowling and less than ideal batting conditions. Keith Parsons inspired a brief counter attack, but was unable to steer his side to victory as the overs diminished and clock counted down!

Bowling Performance of the Day

Taunton is renowned for producing high scoring games. Bowlers very seldom gain much success at the ground. Consequently, Peter Martin's spell of 8 overs 2 for 28 was outstanding. He bowled the only maiden of the day. Glen Chapple captured 4 wickets during 2 different spells. His last wicket in the 43rd over was priceless bearing in mind the impending 12 run penalty. Once again, John Wood removed the danger man - Keith Parsons for 90 - a very useful habit! Hogg finished with 2 for 46 from 7 overs, while Steven Crook (On debut in the NCL) finished with 0 for 34, but bowled at a very lively pace

Batting Performance of the Day

There were a number of excellent performances. Primarily from Mark Chilton who scored his maiden hundred in the NCL (103) from 109 balls (13 x 4 & 1 x 6). A beautiful innings which combined sharp running and occasional aggressive stroke play. Carl Hooper smashed 82 runs from just 78 balls (4 x 4 & 5 x 6). Together with Chilton, the pair added 155 for the 3rd wicket. Earlier in the day, Stuart Law scored 51 runs from just 36 balls (8 x 4 & 1 x 6) to set Lancashire on their way. The run rate never fell below 6 an over after the initial exchanges. Chris Schofield played a brisk innings toward the end (38 runs from 27 balls 4 x 4)

Fielding Performance of the Day

It is never easy fielding under floodlights especially when some areas of the ground remain "dark". Lancashire's ground fielding was very solid. Kyle Hogg made numerous boundary saving stops in the third man region despite the barracking of the crowd and the poor visibility. Most catches were held. Hegg's field placings were well thought out. Lancashire maintained an attacking approach whilst trying to control the flow of runs

Highlights of the Day

  • Losing the toss but being asked to bat in brilliant sunshine
  • Mark Chilton's maiden century in the NCL
  • Watching Lancashire set a new record high score in the competition
  • Lancashire attaining their 10th straight win - maintaining their unbeaten away record and moving back to the top of the table (5) Shrewd field placing and timely fielding changes saved several runs and captured Burns wicket (Hooper was moved to a wide first slip position a couple of balls before catching Burns)

Lowlight of the Day

Lancashire's slow over rate which nearly cost them the match - no other issues

Contentious Discussion Points of the Day

  • Did Mal Loye actually touch the ball when he was adjudged out?
  • Surely Steven Crook received a ball over waist high when he was given out? - hence, a no-ball

Man of the Match

A difficult choice considering the substantial number of team contributions. However, Glen Chapple takes the award for his excellent spell of bowling (4 for 60) considering the batting friendly conditions, the fast outfield and the short straight boundaries
