Match report day 3: Surrey v Lancs in Championship 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Surrey v Lancashire

Summary for Day 3

James Anderson captured the first 5 wickets of Surrey's innings to leave the champions in total disarray just after lunch on the third day. At one stage (either side of the lunchtime break) he removed 4 batsmen in the space of 23 deliveries. Although Surrey's middle and lower batsmen recovered the situation slightly, they were unable to avoid being asked to follow-on for the first time in 5 years. Lancashire secured maximum bonus points by tea. Hegg set exciting fields in a bold effort to capture wickets. He was not too bothered if Surrey reached the boundary. The team fielded well and held all but one catch. However, with lunch approaching, and Surrey easing their way along on 106 for 1, the game appeared to drifting towards a draw. Although Lancashire's bowlers must accept much of the credit, Surrey's batsmen contributed to their own downfall by regularly playing careless shots on a perfect pitch. In their second innings, Surrey lost 2 wickets before the close for just 61 runs (Remaining 258 runs adrift). After leaving the field at 5.16pm (48-1) Surrey reluctantly returned in poor light - only to lose the vital wicket of Mark Ramprakash on the fourth ball.

Bowling Performance of the Day

James Anderson bowled a devastating spell just after lunch to bowl Lancashire into a match winning position. However, his dismissal of Batty (Yorked losing off stump) was incredible to witness. He finished with 5 for 61 in the first innings.

Batting Performance of the Day

Ward scored 49 from 101 balls, and Ramprakash scored 50 from 80 balls. However, Hollioake's 42 runs from 43 balls, and Clarke's 38 from 41 balls were the main highlights. Together they added 64 runs in one ball short of 12 overs.

Fielding Performance of the Day

Flintoff's catch to remove Hollioake was exceptional due to the fact that the player was at full reach moving backwards at first slip. Chilton's catch to remove Tudor at short extra cover was an exceptional full length dive in the face of a vicious drive. Hegg also held a couple of top quality diving catches low in front of first slip.

Highlight of the Day

Enforcing the follow-on, and Anderson's bowling performance

Lowlight of the Day

Ian Ward was dropped by Mark Chilton at first slip from the bowling of Chapple when he was on 48 (100-1) - the catch was not difficult in relation to some of the opportunities which are on offer in the slip cordon during the course of a season. It was also a shame that bad light curtailed play early just when Lancashire had gained the upper hand, and Surrey were on the rack.

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

None.
