Match report day 1: Sussex v Lancs in Championship 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Sussex v Lancashire

Summary for Day 1

Lancashire lost a crucial toss. The pitch appeared to be easy paced and Chris Adams immediately selected to bat. Not for the first time this season, Lancashire captured wickets at a steady rate - always keeping their opponents in check. Kyle Hogg played a temporary role in place of Glen Chapple as he made his way down south from Trent Bridge. At lunch, the match as evenly poised (108 for 2). By tea, the visitors were slightly on top (264 for 7). Unfortunately during the final session Sussex's lower order batsmen (In conjunction with Adams) frustrated Lancashire. The 8th wicket added 75 and the final wicket added 53. Eventually, Schofield wrapped up Sussex's innings with 3 "almost" identical deliveries. Chilton and Sutcliffe survived 4 tricky overs at the end of the day (12 for 0) to leave Lancashire trailing by 373. An excellent days work considering all the circumstances, and one which left Warren's boys marginally in control

Bowling Performance of the Day

Lancashire used 8 different bowlers during the course of the day. Kyle Hogg bowled 8 overs before leaving the field at 3.05pm to make way for Glen Chapple. He removed Tony Cottey for 18 thanks to a great catch from Chris Schofield in the covers. John Wood bowled with enormous passion. His effort in the championship over the last few matches has been appreciable. His final figures were 3 for 64. Chris Schofield joined the bowling line-up after the tea interval. He bowled two brief spells from the Sea end (5.3 overs in total) and finished with 3 for 14. All three of his wickets were leg before decisions. His three victims were Chris Adams for 140, Paul Hutchison 4th ball, and Mushtaq Ahmed for 60

Batting Performance of the Day

Lancashire's openers Mark Chilton and Iain Sutcliffe only needed to survive 4 overs before the close of play. Chilton struck two boundaries in the first over, and Sutcliffe edged a boundary through the vacant third man area from the last ball of the day. Sutcliffe sustained an injury to his hand in the last over but was able to carry on after brief treatment. Earlier in the day Chris Adams struck 140 runs from 191 balls including 16 x 4 & 5 x 6

Fielding Performance of the Day

The short boundary to the pavilion side (Est 55-60 yards) combined with the "brown" outfield and an easy paced pitch did not bode well before the start of play. However, Lancashire's players fared brilliantly as the sun beat down. In particular, Chris Schofield saved endless runs courtesy of superb stops and energetic chases to the boundary edge

Highlights of the Day

  • In a strange way - being able to select Glen Chapple. Good for Lancashire, a shame for Glen
  • Chris Schofield's 3 wickets and excellent fielding
  • Considering the parched outfield and the short boundary to the pavilion side, Lancashire performed exceptionally to dismiss Sussex for 385

Lowlights of the Day

  • Losing a crucial toss and being asked to bowl first
  • Sussex adding 53 runs for the last wicket - the ball regularly flew in the air, either landing just short or travelling just over the fielders. Edges flew through the slips and the frustration mounted
  • Chapple's easy drop when Mushtaq had not scored. The ball seemed to "catch" Chapple off guard at mid-off - Chapple did not have a good day 7 overs for 48 runs

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

Chris Adams did not appear to be out leg before wicket. The ball was drifting down leg side. Adams was not impressed. He reluctantly wandered back to the pavilion to a standing ovation
