Match report day 1: Warks v Lancs in Championship 2003
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Warwickshire v Lancashire

Summary for Day 1

Lancashire lost the toss and found themselves in the field once again. The pitch possessed a green tinge while overhead conditions were improving all the time. The home side lost a wicket in the first over thanks to a low diving catch to his right by Hegg. Knight and Wagh added 46 in just over 10 overs before Chapple struck again. This time Chapple clean bowled Wagh with a ball which nipped back through the gate. Knight was stranded on the crease by Chapple in the 15th over, and when Bell edged to Hooper at first slip in the 22nd over, Warwickshire found themselves reeling at 64 for 4. John Wood removed Trevor Penney with a ball which appeared to be drifting down leg side with only 10 deliveries remaining until the lunch interval. As the ball aged and the wicket eased, Trott and Brown enjoyed themselves at the crease. Lancashire desperately searched for a wicket. They utilised 8 different bowlers. Heads dropped when Trott was dropped by Law. Lancashire breathed a sigh of relief when the new ball became available. 4 overs later, Hogg uprooted Trott's off stump to offer some relief. Shortly afterwards, Brown fell to the ground clutching his right calf. At the close of play, Warwickshire were 342 for 6 a considerably health position considering their early plight

Bowling Performance of the Day

Glen Chapple bowled a super opening spell of 3 for 30 from 10 overs which reduced Warwickshire to 55 for 3 in the 15th over. He regularly beat the bat courtesy of significant bounce and noticeable sideways movement. Kyle Hogg finished the day with 2 for 49 from 20 overs. Spinners Keedy and Hooper were unable to gain any assistance from the wicket and jointly conceded 87 runs without any success from 27 overs. At least they ensured Lancashire maintained their over rate by the close of play. Steven Crook only bowled 7 overs - perhaps he could have been used slightly more. Mark Chilton bowled 10 overs either side of the tea interval. He was extremely economical - only conceding 15 runs

Batting Performance of the Day

Jonathan Trott and Dougie Brown spearheaded Warwickshire's fight back after the home side collapsed to 101 for 5 in the 31st over. The pair batted throughout the afternoon session adding 166 runs from 40 overs. Trott eventually fell for 126 (16 x 4 & 1 x 6), while Dougie Brown (113) limped back to the pavilion just before the scheduled close of play, after pulling a calf muscle. It is very unlikely that Brown will bowl in the game. He might bat with a runner. No other home player surpassed 28

Fielding Performance of the Day

While Lancashire were in control during the morning session, the fielding was keen and sharp. However, team spirit visibly dipped during the afternoon session, which led to a number of mistakes. Captain Warren Hegg remained very vocal behind the stumps as he tried to encourage his team mates

Highlights of the Day

  • Chapple's opening spell
  • Taking 5 wickets before lunch
  • The return of Kyle Hogg to the four day arena

Lowlights of the Day

  • Stuart Law dropping Trott on 91 - yet again Law spilt a chance at first slip. Far too many chances are going to ground, it is time to make a change
  • Not taking a wicket in the afternoon session - the game drifted away from Lancashire
  • Losing the toss yet again
  • The injury sustained by Peter Martin (Back) which prevented him from playing

Contentious Discussion Point of the Day

Trevor Penney was disappointed with the decision of Umpire Jones. The ball did appear to be drifting down the leg side
