Match report: Derbys v Lancs in Twenty20 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Derbyshire v Lancashire

Summary

Dinesh Mongia departed Lancashire following his highly successful three weekspell at the club by helping the team to their first victory in eleven matches. He blasted 50 runs from just 31 balls after earlier returning figures of 2 for 15 from his 4 overs. Under a dark grey sky with a bitterly cold wind blowing all the time, Lancashire won the toss and elected to field first - an obvious choice in the short format of the game and with Duckworth/Lewis looming in the background. Hegg's only dilemma was the poor fading light.

Derbyshire scored freely in the first six overs with the fielding restrictions in place (54-0). However, Keedy and Mongia's introduction into the attack in the 9th and 10th overs respectively, changed the course of the game. Keedy tempted Moss (39) down the track with his third ball and Hegg completed a simple stumping (66-1).

Meanwhile, Mongia conceded just 13 runs from his first three overs. One sensed that Dominic Cork wanted to make an impact on his first return to Derby since his transfer at the end of last season. This he duly achieved in the 14th over, when his direct throw from cover point left Chris Bassano (30) short of his ground (92-2). Cork could not resist completing the umpires duties and raised his finger to send Bassano on his way. Derbyshire only managed one boundary between the 53rd and 111th run - an example of how Lancashire had gained complete control of the match.

Dinesh Mongia's final over (The 16th) accounted for Taylor (5) and Adnan (19), and although Bryant and Sutton both finished unbeaten on 19, Derbyshire's score of 142 was below par despite the ball not coming onto the bat.

Set just over 7 runs per over for victory, Lancashire's reply was positive and commanding, Loye blasted 32 from just 23 balls including three consecutive boundaries of Gunter in the 6th over. Crook hit 15 from just 9 balls before being bowled by Mohammad Ali (30-1), while Law added 31 from 28 deliveries.

Derbyshire will severely regret dropping Mongia (3) in the 10th over with the score on 78 for 2. A poor effort by Taylor at mid-off. Mongia never looked back hammering 5 x 4 & 2 x 6 as the game slipped through the hosts fingers. Despite both Mongia and Schofield departing within the space of 10 balls, Lancashire eased home with 17 deliveries to spare. Dominic Cork celebrated the four leg byes which brought victory by waving his bat in the air. Was this a sign of Lancashire's relief at securing a win, or Cork's final dig at his old club?
