Match report: Yorks v Lancs in Twenty20 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Yorkshire v Lancashire

Summary

Andrew Flintoff returned to Lancashire's side for the second time this season to make his debut in the Twenty 20 cup. His impact was immediate following Craig White's decision to insert Lancashire to bat. Flintoff opened the batting with Mal Loye and immediately started to demolish the bowling. 38 runs came from the first three overs as Flintoff opened his account with five boundary strokes. However, the departure of Mal Loye for 7 in the 3rd over triggered a possession of batsmen who failed to provide the correct level of support.

For some reason, each batsman who joined Flintoff failed to rotate the strike and build a solid partnership. Chapple (2), Cork (5) and Schofield (4) all needlessly threw their wickets away. Hooper seemed slightly unlucky to be adjudged leg before wicket in the 8th over. Flintoff secured his fifty from 29 balls and provided tremendous entertainment for the large crowd and the television audience. He eventually lost his wicket in the 14th over for 85 runs (133-6), grateful for Kirby over stepping earlier in his innings, when caught on 42 at long off by Chris Silverwood.

Captain Warren Hegg sustained a leg injury in the 17th over and required a runner. Hegg was unable to keep wicket and Mal Loye performed well in his place. Ultimately, Lancashire failed to score sufficient runs in the final phase of the innings. The loss of too many early wickets eventually taking its toll. 27 runs from 25 balls and the failure to bat out their overs sent Yorkshire players from the field on a high.

Considering Glen Chapple's experience, it was disappointing to watch far too many half-track deliveries throughout Yorkshire's reply. I can not recall the last time he bowled a good length yorker. Needless to say, Lancashire hemorrhaged runs badly in the first six overs. Ian Harvey looked imperious at the crease and very unlikely to give his wicket away. In the 4th over, Wood fended a lifting ball from Cork to Flintoff at short extra cover to offer a brief rest bite (34-1). However, Jacques and Harvey added 108 for the second wicket, taking the game away from the visitors with consummate ease. Harvey secured his half century from 21 balls and 33 deliveries later, reached a richly deserved century. Jacques (39) was caught by John Wood on the long off boundary in the 15th over from Chapple's bowling - a mere token gesture. Yorkshire eased home by 8 wickets to set up a tense round of last matches.

Lancashire's man of the match - Andrew Flintoff 85 runs, 1 catch and stand-in captain - welcome back!
