Match report Hants v Lancs in Twenty20 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Hampshire v Lancashire

Summary

After several disappointing performances this season in front of the Sky television cameras, Lancashire finally came good in this Twenty/20 quarter-final cup match versus Hampshire. Make no mistake, the toss was crucial and lady luck smiled on Carl Hooper, allowing Lancashire's stand-in captain the opportunity to bowl first. The wicket was extremely bowler friendly and not ideal for the short format of the game. Needless to say, wickets tumbled at an alarming rate, especially as Chapple and Cork both bowled very disciplined lines during the opening exchanges. The first five Hawks batsmen all failed to reach double figures - Udal (5) caught at first slip (7-1), Warne (0) caught by Keedy low at mid-on (10-2), Crawley (5) and Lamb (7) both caught behind (36-4), and Prittipaul (2) stumped with Keedy's second ball (45-5).

A team seldom if ever, recovers from such a desperate start to post a competitive total, and retrospectively the game was already over as a contest by the end of the 9th over. Clarke and Mascarenhas added 27 runs for the sixth wicket before the Australian overseas player hooked to the ball to Mongia at deep square leg. Mongia held the opportunity without breaking stride - classic bad luck when things are going against you (72-6). Pothas scored 10 runs before being bowled by Mongia attempting a reverse sweep (101-7). Mullally and Bruce both fell victims of calamitous run outs as Hampshire's innings all but came to a stand still (114-9). Mascarenhas remained undefeated on 33 and Taylor not out 2 - a total of 120 for 9 containing just seven boundaries was unlikely to be sufficient.

Lancashire's reply galloped along at 10 runs per over for the first four overs mainly due to the aggressive batting of Steven Crook. The asking rate tumbled below 5 an over by the end of the 6th over (56-0). By now the crowd was very quiet and resigned to defeat. The wicket of Crook in the 7th over for 27 from 16 balls (56-1) merely offered the chance for the crowd to cheer in exasperation rather than celebration. Loye and Chilton worked the ball into the gaps during the middle phase of Lancashire's reply. Boundary strokes were not crucial. Loye secured his fifty from 44 balls in the 14th over, with just 19 runs required. By now, the crowd had thinned out significantly. The rush to beat the exit from the car park seemed more important than watching the final rights on the playing field. Lancashire eased home with 21 balls to spare with Mal Loye not out 64 and Mark Chilton not out 23 - an unbeaten partnership of 65. Edgbaston here we come!!

Lancashire's man of the match - Mal Loye (Although everyone played their part)
