Match report day 2: Lancs v Sussex in Championship 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Lancashire v Sussex

Summary for Day 2

If the wheels came off at Tunbridge Wells last week, then the car was well and truly stolen on the second day of this match against bottom of the table Sussex. The lack of application and discipline shown at the crease was simply appalling. Player after player simply gifted their wicket to the visitors without a care in the world. Many more performances of this nature in the four day arena and not only will the championship be a distant dream, but the title favourites will become relegation certainties.

The morning did not start any better for Lancashire in the field. The bowling was atrocious. Endless short pitched deliveries to both Adams and Lewry. Surely, a few full length deliveries and the odd yorker would have been a more practical way to remove the last batsman? Adams eased to his 150 from 194 balls with eight men standing on the boundary edge every time the Sussex captain was on strike. Thankfully, Lewry's cavalier approach at the crease accounted for his downfall. A rare delivery from Cork which was actually aimed at he stumps - 470 all out.

Within 30 minutes of Lancashire's innings starting, three wickets had fallen. Swann (6), Loye (0) and Chilton (9). When Loye was out second ball, it was the third time he had been dismissed in just 4 deliveries. Deep down, one already sensed the writing was on the wall and that Saturday would become a spare day (22-3). Carl Hooper was clearly suffering every time the ball hit his bat. He pulled his right hand away without fail. One has to question his fitness and wonder if he should have been selected to play. Martin-Jenkins trapped Hooper in front of his stumps for just 9 runs to leave Lancashire in dire trouble at 52 for 4 at lunch.

Wickets continued to tumble at an alarming rate during the afternoon session. 6 further batsman returned to the home dressing room within the space of 16 overs. Chapple's (21) attempted pull stroke ended up back in the hands of the bowler Lewry (73-5). Crook (9) was caught by Montgomerie close in on the leg side (90-6). He was dropped at 2nd slip by Prior three overs previous. Law (25) offered a bat pad catch to Montgomerie at silly point in Mushtaq Ahmed's next over (91-7). Cork's woeful performance with the bat continued with a shocking shot in the 37th over. Another simple catch for Montgomerie - this time fielding at first slip (100-8). Hegg elected to turn down simple singles in a bid to protect Mahmood. Heavens know why under the circumstances? In the 39th over, Hegg (3) was caught down the leg side to leave Lancashire on 101 for 9.

What followed in the next 16 overs was truly spectacular, and offered a brief rest bite from the punishment the spectators were enduring. Sajid Mahmood and Gary Keedy combined to add 113 runs for the final wicket, with the former of these two players hitting 94 runs from just 66 balls before being the last man out. Mahmood's score smashed his previous best by 60. His innings contained 13 x 4 and 3 x 6 and included 4 consecutive boundaries from the somewhat shocked Mohammad Akram. Keedy played his usual "stone-wall" role in a 10th wicket partnership. A brief shower at 4pm resulted in the players being forced from the field for an early tea (214-9). Upon the resumption, Mahmood was caught in the deep by Adams with just the second ball. A standing ovation from the crease to the pavilion was the only appropriate way to recognise Mahmood's contribution. Unfortunately, Lancashire were forced to follow-on 256 runs behind.

With 38 overs to negotiate before the close of play, Lancashire desperately needed to show some application to avoid an innings defeat. Chilton and Swann batted sensibly until umpire Holder adjudged Chilton (21) leg before wicket from a full toss. He was not impressed with the decision (46-1). Alec Swann grafted hard for his 27 runs before being beaten by Mushtaq in the 22nd over, and the finger was raised following another vociferous appeal (70-2). Surely enough is enough where Swann is concerned. Loye (24) edged Lewry to Ambrose in the 29th over (90-3) and soon after posting a fifty partnership with Carl Hooper, Law (42) was brilliantly bowled by Mushtaq (142-4).

At close, Lancashire still trailed by 108 runs. Without question, they will suffer their second consecutive championship defeat on the third day of this match. This will provide everyone (other than Mahmood) plenty of time to reflect on a truly disgraceful, second rate effort, on Saturday.
