Match report day 1: Surrey v Lancs in Championship 2004

Summary of day 1

The lush green slippery slope leading from Lancashire's "Marquee" dressing room to the edge of the pitch, served as a pertinent reminder to the players which direction the team is heading down. Even when presented with an ideal opportunity to bowl first, when Hooper won the toss, Lancashire selected to bat first - a totally and utterly bizarre decision considering the previous days and overnight conditions. The magnitude of the error was prevalent after just 30 minutes play, when the scoreboard read 21 for 4. Chilton (2), Sutcliffe (0), Mongia (12), and Haynes, yes Jamie Haynes (2) all found themselves dismissed. The decision to play the latter player at number 3 in the batting line up eclipsing the choice to bat first in terms of disbelief and mirth value. The visitors stumbled to 128 for 5 at lunch, with Schofield once again the most accomplished player at the crease.

Surrey's four pronged pace attack rolled over Lancashire's last 5 wickets for 82 runs during the afternoon session. With the pitch drying out by the minute, the hosts could not wait to take to the crease. Suddenly the game was transformed. Surrey batted with patience while Lancashire introduced their toothless pace attack. Cork and Chapple bowled far too short, and Mahmood and Hogg far too wide. Newman eased his way to 61 before being stumped by Haynes (122-2), and Ramprakash moved almost unnoticed to 55 as Surrey trailed by just 62 runs by the close. One senses Saturday will be a day off providing plenty of time to review directions to Durham and Derby for 2005.
