Summary of day 1

Having lost a crucial toss, Lancashire were forced to bowl first. Surrey collapsed to 58 for 4 with Sajid Mahmood accounting for Butcher (30) and Ramprakash (3). Unfortunately, Surrey recovered to 346 for 7 by the close of play, with Alistair Brown unbeaten on 144. With the wicket already showing significant signs of taking spin, one fancies Lancashire are starring down the barrel of a loaded gun. The players once again becoming embroiled in disputes with the spectators rather than focussing on the task in hand.
