Match report day 3: Lancs v Surrey in Championship 2004

Summary of day 3

At the conclusion of this match, one of Lancashire's supporters decided to verbally attack Warren Hegg as the players left the field. Whilst the timing was very poor and Hegg handled the situation incredibly well, one could also understand the logic, as it represented the frustration and disappointment of all concerned. The drop to division 2 has finally dawned on all concerned. (Something which I mentioned back in June). Once again, the bowlers bowled well, but the batsmen never turned up. Okay, on this occasion they did have an excuse. The pitch was turning square occasionally and the bounce was unpredictable - just ask Mal Loye who received a shooter from Doshi to send him back to the pavilion. 20 wickets fell in just over two sessions with Keedy and Hooper bowling Lancashire temporarily back into contention with 6 for 95 and 4 for 56 respectively. However, a target score of 277 was always too high, especially for a team completely unable to apply themselves at the crease, and who are at rock bottom where confidence is concerned. Lancashire must pick themselves up for the last 2 matches of the season against Worcestershire and Gloucestershire to prove that Houdini still exists!
