Match report day 4: Worcs v Lancs in Championship 2004
by Neil Adams

Scorecard:Worcestershire v Lancashire

Summary of day 4

Lancashire valiant bid to beat Worcestershire narrowly failed in the fading light of New Road following an interesting days play. The visitors managed to capture 8 wickets in 47 overs before Hegg elected to shake hands and call the match a draw. Thankfully, the forecasted bad weather held off, and neither team resorted to a contrived finish.

Lancashire lost early morning wickets to raise the home sides' hope of victory. Thankfully, Hooper scored 75 runs, and Crook batted with enormous courage and common sense to add 24 in a fifth wicket stand of 53. After a brief rain interval, Lancashire blasted quick runs to set Worcestershire 294 for victory from a minimum of 45 overs. Quite incredibly, the hosts made no attempt to score the runs thus consigning themselves to division 2 (How pathetic). One sensed that Rhodes felt Lancashire did not offer a realistic target and decided to try and take Lancashire down with them as a punishment. Lancashire must now beat Gloucester at Old Trafford next week and not concede anymore than 5 points to remain in division one.
