Left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati took his second four-wicket haul that included the dangerous looking Dwayne Smith and Rohit Sharma to send Deccan Chargers packing for a paltry 100 runs, 78 short of the 178 the Chennai Super Kings accumulated.
Deccan Chargers got off to a disastrous start - they lost all the top three batsmen - Adam Gilchrist, Herschelle Gibbs and VVS Laxman for ducks. While Gilchrist fell of the very first ball to Albie Morkel, Gibbs fell victim to a Sudeep Tyagi yorker and Laxman could not keep a flick down to give Morkel his second wicket.
Then began the fun as in came Smith (49) to join Sharma (21). Smith was dropped twice off two balls and it must be said that both of them were sitters. Smith then made sure he would get the Chennai outfit to pay for the errors.
He alongside Rohit Sharma went on a counter-attack. Boundaries and sixes started to come in pairs. The Smith onslaught began in the fourth over and the three overs between fourth and the sixth produced 45 runs.
Things started to roll back in place for the Chargers but just then Sharma did something totally uncalled for. He tried to hoick Jakati over the deep mid-wicket fence but unfortunately could only find Badrinath waiting for it. The wicket ended a 72 run fourth-wicket stand off just six overs.
Four balls later, Smith misread a straighter delivery from the left-armer and was found plumb in front of his wickets. After he departed, the procession began as Jakati and Muralitharan mopped up the tail without any more hiccups.
Jakati finished with four for 22 from four, while Muttiah Muralitharan and Morkel finished with two wickets each.
Earlier batting first, Chennai Super Kings posted a massive 178 for three in their alloted 20 overs. They looked like they were a team on an upswing out with a point or two to prove.
Their openers Matthew Hayden and Murali Vijay got their team off to a smashing start.
Hayden, who is the holder of the orange cap for the most number of runs in the tournament, got into rhythm straightaway and with display of some sheer power started to hit the Chargers attack all around the park. RP Singh came under the Hayden scanner as the burly left-hander first hit him over the covers and then a slashed the next one for a six over third man.
When he got out after playing a brilliant knock of 43 runs off just 26 balls, studded with five hits to the boundary and three sixes, Chennai already had 60-odd runs in seven overs on the board.
Thereafter, Dhoni and Murali Vijay (31) kept the momentum going and then the skipper alongside Suresh Raina kept up the good work.
The Super Kings were always in command and despite losing Suresh Raina towards the end, they continued to pile up runs. Courtesy a comeback to form half century from skipper MS Dhoni (58), they reached an excellent total.
With this win, the table toppers Deccan Chargers have been toppled and Chennai Super Kings with 9 points, now lead the Indian Premier League points tally.
