DateLine: 6th December 2009
India completed a comprehensive victory over Sri Lanka on the fifth morning of the third Test in Mumbai. With this win this team which prides itself in consistency since a long 18 odd months now is the number one team in Tests and will finish this year at that place. The Emerald Islanders went down by an innings and 24 runs and once Sangakkara got out of the first over of the day, the inevitable of an innings defeat looked pretty obvious.

At the start, what stood between a win and the numero uno position in Test cricket and India was Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara. The thought in his mind would had been to avert a second successive innings defeat. His efforts yesterday made everyone believe that the side can come closer to make India bat again but Zaheer Khan first up had other ideas. The left-arm seamer in his first over of the day threw in a length delivery that cut away late like a perfect legcutter. Sangakkara pushed at it and only succeeded in edging it to Dhoni behind the stumps.
Zaheer who had now tasted blood began a procession of Lankan wickets. First Herath and then Kulasekara became victims of his short deliveries. One trying to pull and the other prodding at one outside the off-stump. The formalities of an innings victory were completed in the next over as Murali after being beaten twice in an over was caught behind of Harbhajan Singh.
