Chennai Super Kings who were on the brink of missing out on the semi-final spot fought back as the floored a strong Mumbai Indians to creep into the top four. Mumbai Indians after controlling of about more than eight percent of the match failed to finish off the job as they were slayed by a determined home side who were looking nothing short of a win.

MS Dhoni was clear in his thinking process as he elected to bat first and out strode into the middle last match centurion for Chennai Murali Vijay and Hayden. The Mumbai bowlers unlike the Rajasthan bowlers kept the openers quiet with some excellent bowling. Harbhajan Singh has being handed the duties of bowling the with the new ball in the recent matches and this time too Sachin entrusted the new ball to the off-spinner. Harbhajan responded to his captain's call as he removed Vijay (14, 17b, 2x4) who was looking quite dangerous in the middle. Raina (23, 18b, 1x6, 2x4) after his brief usual flourish fell as the the Chennai Super Kings slumped.

Skipper MS Dhoni (31, 18b, 4x4) and Mathew Hayden (35, 31b, 1x6, 2x4) added 50 in 5 overs as the pitch began to show signs of wear and tear. Unlike in the previous encounter between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals the ball grippe the surface and refused to come onto the bat. The score would have being much lower had it not being for the innovative Badrinath the score would have being much lower.

Mumbai in reply got off to the usual brisk and risk-fire start as Dhawan and Tendulkar batted sensibly. After adding 46 in 6 overs Dhawan (16, 18b, 2x4) tried to cut a delivery that was close to his body and in the process chopped the ball back onto his stumps. The Chennai heat took its toll on Tendulkar's body as he was visibly struggling. With every run he took it was becoming a struggle forcing him to retire in the 10th over when his score was on 38. That started the tumble of wickets for Mumbai Indians. From 62 for 1 it soon became 89 for 7 as the innings crumbled.

Raynard (3, 4b) who replaced Tendulkar had a rush of blood and was stumped of a a harmless Raina off-spinner while Bravo (2, 3b) in an attempt to launch Tyagi into the stands was brilliantly caught in the deep by Thushara. Tiwary (14, 18b, 1x4) found Hayden at midwicket and Pollard's poor run in the IPL continued as he was caught by Vijay for 5. Sathish (4, 5b) was undone by Badrinath-Dhoni combo as he was run-out and he was followed back into the hut by McLaren who was trapped leg-before by Ashwin.

With the fall of McLaren, Tendulkar returned to the crease and with it the hopes of Mumbai Indians soared. But he could add just seven runs to his score as he was caught at long-on by Vijay of Thushara as he looked for the maximum. But Thushara's joy was short-lived as he was taken out of the attack in the very next ball as he bowled the second beamer of the innings. Harbhajan threatened to take Mumbai Indians to win all by himself but in the end it proved way beyond him as the host won the match by a comfortable margin of 24 runs.
