Player: | T Lungley |
DateLine: 22nd November 2005
Tom Lungley is a useful young cricketer who has so far been unfortunate with injuries in his career to date. A right arm medium-fast bowler, and handy lower order batsman, he was a surprise name on the shortlist of players for the 2003/4 winter intake for the ECB National Academy, as only in that seasons Twenty20 competition had he shown anything like above average form. However, barely a week later Lungleys season had been ended by a knee injury. The diagnoses of severe tendonitis meant Lungley missed the whole of 2004, and Derbyshire agreed to defer the last year of his contract until the 2005 season. In the last month of that season he was able to play his first Championship match for two years, and thus he adequately proved his fitness to be given a new one year deal for 2006. Lungleys lack of express pace means his bowling is arguably better suited to limited-overs cricket, although he can be a touch on the expensive side in both forms of the game. There is still hope that Lungleys batting can develop enough for him to bat at no.7 rather than no.9 or no.10, and a full, injury free season may give him the confidence and rhythm to take his bowling to the next level namely consistently taking wickets for under 30.
