Sachin fails fitness test by CricketArchive staff reporter

May 23: Sachin Tendulkar did not take the fitness test in order to prove his fitness for the team selection for the Test series against West Indies. Trainer Ramji Srinivasan, who supervised Tendulkar's five-day fitness programme at the MRF Pace Academy last week, said the batsman's shoulder was all right but the biceps would take a longer time to strengthen. "His shoulder is alright. Biceps take a longer time to strengthen and the time taken for complete recovery of biceps differs from person to person," he said.

BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah said opener Wasim Jaffer, who underwent a fitness test following a shin surgery, was fit and available for selection. Physio Andrew Leipus said, "we looked at it (Jaffer's fitness test) from the point of view of his legs and he is fit. He was slightly out of breath today because he is recovering from viral fever."

On Sachin Andrew Leipus said, "We don't want to do any further damage to his shoulder. We are looking at the bigger picture in order to prolong his career. The comprehensive rehabilitation process will continue". BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah said that the Board was keen to have Tendulkar in the team as soon as possible and his rehabilitation process will be reviewed in two to three weeks time by the team management.

The Indian squad for the four-match Test series against the West Indies will be announced here tomorrow. The first Test begins in Antigua on June 2.
