Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland said attendance for each of the first two days at Melbourne was likely to top 90,000. “It is a overwhelming response from fans of both countries. We are looking at not only breaking the record on day one, but day two and possibly later days too,” Sutherland added.
The Australian record for a single day’s attendance at a Test match is
90,800 set in 1960-61, Cricket Australia said. The biggest crowd for an
entire Test match is about 350,000 when England played Australia at the
MCG in 1936-37.
