A defamation case, filed against India's cricket coach Greg Chappell for his controversial comments against the country's parliamentarians, was on Saturday withdrawn by the petitioner.

The ninth judicial magistrate at Alipore Court, who was scheduled to hear the matter, accepted the application for withdrawal of the case as "not pressed." Petitioner cum lawyer Somnath Dey filed an application before the magistrate stating that owing to changed circumstances and in view of requests of many sports lovers, he was not inclined to proceed with the case. Dey also cited the upcoming World Cup and his unwillingness to disturb the team and its management before the tournament as another reason for withdrawing the defamation case against Chappell. Dey filed the defamation suit on November 28 stating that Chappell's recent statement as published in newspapers was 'defamatory and derogatory'. Chappell had said in Cape Town on November 26 that he was not surprised by the sharp criticism from MPs following India's poor show in the one-dayers so far. He said the MPs were doing their job. "I am not surprised. They (MPs) are paid to do so in Parliament," Chappell had said in the post-match media conference after India's 106-run defeat in the third ODI against South Africa.LATEST SCORES
