Media Release - 11 January 2007

Aleem Dar is known to many as one of the best umpires in the world in modern day cricket. Till date, he has officiated in 37 Test matches and 75 One-Day Internationals, both figures being records for a Pakistani umpire and the latter being a record for any official in the history of the sub-continent.

Aleem Dar is another success story from Pakistan Cricket. He made his debut as a One Day International umpire in 2000 in a match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka at Gujranwala and as a Test umpire in 2003 in a match between Bangladesh and England at Dhaka, Bangladesh. Within one year of his umpiring Test debut, he was elevated to the International Cricket Council (ICC) Elite Panel of Umpires in which there are currently only 9 top umpires from the cricketing world. He has umpired in the 2003 World Cup, in two ICC Champions Trophies (England, 2004 and India, 2006 including the final) and in the Super Series between Australia and World XI in 2005. Aleem Dar was jointly-awarded Best Umpiring Team of the Year Award by ICC along with Simon Taufel in 2006. He has also been nominated for the ICC Umpire of the Year Award three years in a row in 2004, 2005 and 2006. He has also played domestic first-class cricket for Lahore and Allied Bank Limited.

Pakistan is represented by 5 umpires at ICC level and 10 umpires at Asian Cricket Council level. Aleem Dar is one of the best and top-ranked umpires in the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires as per ICC's rating. He is respected amongst the cricket community internationally including players, umpires, referees and officials. In a recent correspondence with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), ICC Umpires and Referees Manager Doug Cowie acknowledged, "Aleem is going very well in his Ashes series – with plenty of focus on him – he handles the pressure very well now and he is becoming one of our senior umpires." Aleem Dar has a humble personality and has a calming influence on the game even in intense situations.

Aleem Dar was honored by PCB in a ceremony hosted earlier today by Chairman, PCB at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore for his meritorious services rendered to the game of cricket in the field of umpiring. PCB, under its philosophy of recognizing professionalism and excellence, acknowledges the laurels that he has brought home. This example will set precedence and be a source of motivation for others to emulate him. PCB wishes Aleem Dar much more success in the future.
