Is there a more awesome sight in cricket today than Brett Lee in full flow? If the grandest spectacle in the game is a fast bowler unleashing his thunderbolts then Lee epitomizes this more than any other player. In Test matches in particular he is terrific to behold – for the spectator not for the terrified batsman – as he bowls at his full pace which could be hovering around the 100 mph mark. But even in ODIs there is very little difference for Lee believes in going flat out. On a pitch that has even a little bounce Lee can be terrifyingly aggressive. But then Lee is not all pace and nothing else. He has an intelligent slower delivery that foxes the best of batsmen and his yorker and bouncer are highly effective. With all his dependence on pace he is generally able to maintain the right line and length and in favourable conditions is able to swing the ball menacingly. Tall, good looking and friendly off the field even if he is a ferocious competitor on it Lee is very much the game’s pin up boy and is a great catch endorsing various products. It has not always been like this though. Lee has had his downs too, having to fight off injuries, charges of throwing and allegations of being an over hyped cricketer. In fact he is getting better and better as proved by his showing in the Ashes series in 2005. He is also getting better with the bat and is eager to be classified as an all rounder. That may well happen but Lee’s enduring image is one of the great fast bowlers of the modern era.
