A cricketer who brings a lot of zest to his game Dilhara Fernando has been able to ward off the challenge from a plethora of young medium pacers to be more or less a regular in the Sri Lankan team particularly in ODIs. He has pace, is able to extract bounce from even a placid pitch and his quick bouncer can pose a problem for most batsmen. Fernando has strong shoulders, is able to hit the deck and moves the ball adroitly off the seam. He has had problems with his length and direction largely because of his insistence at bowling fast. Unfortunately he has also had more than his share of injuries. Undaunted Fernando has fought back each time and of late has shown a lot of improvement in cutting down on no balls and wides and concentrating more on line and length without compromising much on his pace in the process picking up the art of reverse swing, a deceptive slower ball and a well directed yorker. He has found it increasingly difficult to find a regular place in Tests thanks to the growing number of young seam bowlers making their way up but he remains a potent force in ODIs where he is an integral part of the four pronged pace attack. He was a part of the Mumbai Indians team in the IPL.
