Player:CK Kapugedera

DateLine: 20th February 2007

The latest in the long line of swashbuckling batsmen from Sri Lanka Chamara Kapugedera is a naturally aggressive right handed batsman who wastes little time in going for the bowling. A school prodigy Kapugedera attracted considerable attention during his teenage years and following a prolific 2003-04 season he was picked for the Under-19 tour of Pakistan. He did not disappoint getting 131 in a one-day match and the following year impressed while getting a stroke filled 70 for Sri Lanka A against the New Zealand A side. The national selectors had seen enough and he was the surprise selection for the Sri Lankan squad that toured India in 2005. He however had to pull out of the tour because of injury but he was still a month short of his 19th birthday when he finally made his ODI debut against Australia at Perth early the following year. He got a maiden half-century against Pakistan a couple of months later. He made his Test debut against England at LordÂ’s in a most inauspicious manner being out for a first ball duck but a half century in the next game and a 63 against South Africa early in the 2006-07 season means that he will continue to be in the selectorsÂ’ notebooks. He has age, besides talent on his side and is a long-term prospect. He has represented Chennai Super Kings in the IPL and played in the finals where they lost to Rajasthan Royals. He is considered a good prospect for Sri Lanka in the future
