If there is one cricketer who should not be judged on figures alone it is Shahadat Hossain. Yes, he is a medium pace bowler who averages almost 50 in Tests after seven matches. In 2005, on his Test debut against England at Lords just six weeks before his 19th birthday he went through a harrowing experience being hit for 101 runs off 12 overs. But then he is also the bowler who almost broke New Zealand batsman Matthew Sinclair toes with a really fast yorker in a warm up game in October 2004. Sinclair had to retire hurt. And during the 2005-06 season there were distinct signs that Hossain had arrived in a major way on the international scene. He first took four for 108 in the first innings of the second Test against Sri Lanka at Colombo. Some six months later he emerged as the pace spearhead in the absence of Mashrafe Mortaza in the home series against Sri Lanka and bagged five for 86 in the second Test at Bogra becoming only the second Bangladesh paceman to take five wickets in an innings. On the tour to Zimbabwe in July 2006, Hossain became the first Bangladeshi to take a hat-trick in ODIs. He is tall, has a smooth run up, a strong frame and raw pace. He has naturally aggressive not unexpectedly for he numbers among his heroes Brett Lee, Shoaib Akhtar and Wasim Akram. According to Habibul Bashar Hossain has ``the fast bowler's attitude and thats priceless. He is an exciting prospect.
