Player:BJ Haddin

DateLine: 3rd June 2008

Brad Haddin has been waiting for his chance in the Australian team for a number of years now, and has been called into service only when Adam Gilchrist needed a rest. But even to hold this position he had to see off a lot of competition from other players of the same caliber. With the retirement of the legendary wicket-keeper in early 2008, Haddin is now the number one candidate for both the Tests as well as ODIs.

However, at 30 years of age, time might be running out for this not so young player from New South Wales. Even then he has some talent and the pressure of being a second choice wicket-keeper has not hindered his batting over the past three seasons and his keeping to both fast bowling as well as spin bowling had been very sharp.

In 2004-05 he scored 916 first-class runs at an average of 57.25 while in 2005-06 he followed it up with 617 Pura Cup runs at 51.41 and added another 669 at 55.75 in 2006-07. Based on these fabulous performances, he was chosen for the 2007 World Cup but as an understudy, he did not play a game. But he has appeared in more than 25 ODIs, including some as only a specialist. He was a part of the Ashes series in both 2005 and 2006 but only as a spectator. Those days seem to be over for now. He made his debut for Australia against West Indies with a broken finger. He did not want to let go off, a chance of playing for Australia after waiting for 7 years. He had a modest campaign in the West Indies and will know that replacing one of the greats in the game won't be easy.
