Kallis crosses 10,000 runs; North hits century on debut

Jacques Kallis became the eighth batsman, and the first South African, to reach 10,000 Test runs when he made 27 on the second day of the opening Test against Australia on Friday.

 

Kallis joined an illustrious list containing Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar of India, Australia trio Allan Border, Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting and Brian Lara of West Indies. Earlier in the day the 33-year-old Kallis failed to pick up a wicket in eight overs of seam bowling.

 

At the other end of the scale in terms of test experience is Marcus North (117), who scored a century on his debut for Australia in the process becoming the eighteenth Australian batsman to score a century on debut. Michael Clarke was the last the batsman to score a century on debut which was in 2004 against India at Bangalore.
