Thushara made his first-class debut in 1998-99 and after a few years of steady improvement he was included for Sri Lanka's tour of South Africa in 2002. He made his Test debut against West Indies in 2003, but failed to make the Test or ODI squad for the England tour later in the year. He is a hard-hitting striker of the ball and has two first-class half-centuries to his name. He was recalled to the Test squad for the tour of West Indies in 2008 and he impressed with eight wickets in two Tests.
