The spearhead of the Bangladesh attack for some time now Mashrafe Mortaza has emerged as a paceman of much promise. He was fortunate to have his early tutelage under the watchful eyes of Andy Roberts. Working hard on every aspect of fast bowling he was capped against Zimbabwe at Dhaka in 2001-2002. Incidentally this was his first class debut. Starting out as a teenager who loved to bow last he has over the years cut down on speed concentrating on line and length and this has yielded dividends. He had four for 60 in the first innings against England in the second Test at Chittagong in 2003-04 including the wickets of Nasser Hussain, Michael Vaughan and Graham Thorpe the last two in three balls. In England in 2005 out of the six wickets that Bangladesh took in the two Tests Mortaza accounted for four impressing with his speed, swing and accuracy. In August 2006 he took six for 26 in the third ODI against Kenya to star in his teams first series win on foreign soil. With the bat he can be a pretty hard striker of the ball as underlined by a career strike rate of 97.5 in ODIs.
