An all rounder who has rendered yeoman service to South African cricket in both forms of the game in the new millennium Andrew Hall’s ability to stay and fight when the chips are down is his most endearing quality. His obdurate batsmanship whether at the top of the order or in the middle has proved of immense value to the side in Tests while his nippy medium pacers can have the best of batsmen in trouble with their unexpected bounce. In ODIs Hall performs the utility role admirably giving the scoring rate the necessary impetus in the late overs or breaking a troublesome partnership with a sharp in cutter. Hall started his Test career with 70 against Australia at Cape Town in 2001-2002 and is one of the few batsmen to be stranded on 99 not out at the end of the innings – against England at Leeds in 2003. His most famous innings is certainly the marathon 163 against India at Kanpur in November 2004 where he opened the innings and was sixth out after defying the wiles of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh for almost ten hours in the perfect sheet anchor innings. It remains his only Test hundred. Hall has had stints with Worcestershire and Kent in the English county championship.
