Darren Sammy is the first international cricketer to emerge from St Lucia, an island rediscovering its cricket culture with the new Beausejour Stadium has captured imagination. Due to a lack of options, cricketers from there tend to develop as all-rounders and this has encouraged their Sammy too. He spent some time at Lord's with the MCC cricket staff and showed off his skills as a batsman & right-arm medium-pacer as part of the University of the West Indies Vice-Chancellor's XI. Then he went on to win a one-day cap in England in 2004 and was called up late to the Champions Trophy squad in September 2004 after Jermaine Lawson pulled out with a stress-fractured back. In July 2006, he was named as St Lucia's captain for West Indies' first-ever Twenty20 tournament and was recalled for the tour of England in 2007. Sammy made his debut at Old Trafford in the third Test and celebrated with 7 for 66 in the second innings. He made his home debut in an ODI against Sri Lanka in early 2008.
