A tall medium-pacer, he was hailed as a replacement for Glenn McGrath by many experts. The 34-year-old did not disappoint in his debut Test series at the age of 30 against South Africa, where he replaced McGrath and bagged 20 wickets at an impressive 15.75. He also won the Man of the Series award there. His home debut was equally impressive as he picked up 26 wickets at 17 in the 2006 Ashes to show that Australia need not be worried with Warne and McGrath retiring at the end of the series. Even though he was very good in the long form of the game, he was dropped from the one-day team during the ensuing CB Series and also the 2007 world cup team as his economy was considered a bit too high. He later replaced the injured Brett Lee in the World Cup winning squad. Clark gained a Cricket Australia contract after a 45-wicket season in 2001-02 before losing out due to ankle and rib injuries. However, in 2004-05, he got 40 breakthroughs to again make an impression on the selectors. Another 34 Test wickets were added to his collection at an average of 26.52 against Sri Lanka, India and West Indies in 2007-08. Off late Clarke has been troubled with injuries. Australia, in a state where their bowling looks ordinary, would look forward to Clarke to repeat the feats he achieved in his early days.
