Match notes
Levy began in good touch and he and Hubbard opened with 112 before the latter left. Some useful batting followed and at stumps Goodwin and Leeson had shared an unfinished sixth wicket partnership of 103. On the second morning the partnership continued to 135 at which stage Leeson was dismissed from the bowling of Chipperfield. In the two balls following Rofe and Holdsworth both were dismissed with Chipperfield achieving a hat trick. Broadfoot stayed while Goodwin went on to his century but after 66 runs had been added for the ninth wicket the left arm medium pace bowler Scott quickly removed Goodwin and Pizzey.
New South Wales made a good start with 74 on the board before a wicket fell. Donnelly played steadily and shared in some useful partnerships before being fifth out at 241. Allsopp was in good touch and remained undefeated at stumps. On the third day Eaton left without addition but Allsopp, aided by the lower order continued to his century and it was through his efforts that New South Wales was able to take a first innings lead. Hubbard and Broadfoot were the main wicket takers though Weir was quite economical without being able to make a break through.
When Queensland batted again Goodwin played another good innings while Weir and Hubbard repeated their first innings efforts by each reaching the thirties. Goodwin was quickly brought into the Queensland team for the opening Sheffield Shield match of the season, while Levy retained his place from last season. During the season Hubbard, Leeson, Marshall and Weir each made their debut in first class cricket.
It was agreed that each State should be allowed to include a senior player in their respective teams to fill the role of captain. MA Noble led New South Wales Colts at the age of fifty-five years while the Queensland manager, Holdsworth, who accepted the responsibility of captaincy was thirty-nine years old. Attendance is recorded at 1,006 on the first day and at 1,983 on the second day but no figure is available for the third day. Daily gate takings were stated at £34/13/- and £64/4/- respectively.
