Notes
--> WSC West Indies target was 48 runs in 16 overs
--> RW Marsh retired hurt in the WSC Australia innings (team had lost 5 wickets) - he returned when the score was 78/6
Attendance: 45,233 This was the last International Cup Match before the finals and West Indies required a win to qualify, Australia having already done so. The Australians recovered from seven for 88 by way of a partnership of 41 in 44 minutes between Ian Chappell and Lillee and they finally posted a score that was sufficient to allow the bowlers a chance of restricting the West Indians. Then came the rain and over two hours was lost. When play resumed the West Indies required 48 runs from sixteen overs and they achieved their target quite easily in nine overs and three balls. The umpires believed fifteen overs were required to be bowled and continued on, but play ended after the twelfth over at 10.25 p.m. when further rain set in. Marsh was hit on the head by a fast rising ball from Daniel and his helmet travelled some eighty metres. Australia was unable to select Lillee who was suffering a thigh injury, while Malone, whose wife was ill, had returned to Perth.
