On the first day the game started two hours late, at 2.30pm, because the Cheshire team missed their connecting train at Leeds. For the visitors, there were 17 fours, 2 threes and 6 twos in Pointon's 110. It was the first century scored in a Championship match. Davenport's 57 included 9 fours. In the Cheshire first innings, Pointon and Davenport added 107 runs for the third wicket. For Durham, Crosby's 103 contained 17 fours, 2 threes and 6 twos, coincidentally the same innings breakdown as in Pointon's century. There was 1 five and 11 fours in Welford's 64. In the Durham second innings, Crosby and Young put on 142 runs for the first wicket, and Welford and W F Whitwell 54 runs for the eighth wicket. Durham's second innings total of 329 for 8 wickets was the joint second highest of the season. The match run aggregate of 779 runs was also the second highest of the year.
