This return match ended as a draw. Bad light stopped play at 3.30 pm on the second day, and was followed by heavy rain which caused play to be abandoned. The meeting between these two teams in July had ended in an eight-wicket victory for Northamptonshire. Due to ninth and tenth wicket partnerships by Simpson with Murphy of 96 and with Robinson of 46, the home side gained a first innings lead that appeared unlikely when 8 wickets were down for 152 and saving the follow-on was still 13 runs away. Simpson's 141 not out was the third highest individual score of the season and included 4 sixes and 18 fours.
For the visitors Pool had scores of 56, with 9 fours, and 50. G J Thompson's 89 included 13 fours. Smith was injured keeping wicket in the Northumberland innings and Pool took his place.
[Missing: Extras breakdown; in Northamptonshire 2nd inns boundaries in Pool 50; in Northumberland inns duration of, and 3's and 2's in Simpson's 141 not out.]
