This card comes from the Minor Counties Research Project
Buckinghamshire won this return match at 6.05 pm on the second day by an innings and 64 runs, after Hertfordshire followed on 152 runs behind. The game between the two sides at Watford in July had been drawn. For the winners, Wright took 10 wickets in the match for 58 runs, including taking his one hundredth wicket in Championship matches when dismissing Field in the Hertfordshire second innings. There were 9 fours in the debutant Mitchell's 98*, 6 fours in Gresson's 90, scored in 140 minutes, and 7 fours in Bartlett's 50, scored in 42 minutes. In the Buckinghamshire innings, Gresson and M W Wright put on 109 for the third wicket, Mitchell and Allcock 67 for the eighth wicket, and Mitchell and Bartlett 92 runs for the ninth wicket. For Hertfordshire, Butcher's 54 included 3 fours and H H Cobb's 51 contained 8 fours. Dunn took 7 wickets for 179 runs in the Buckinghamshire innings. The runs he conceded were the season's highest for both an innings and a match, and a new record for the competition. The 66 overs bowled by Titchmarsh were a new high for an innings in the Championship and the 57.3 bowled by Dunn were the second highest during the season. For M W Wright the 32 maidens bowled in an innings and the 53 in the match were both the highest number during the season. It is not clear from match reports why only three bowlers were used by Hertfordshire in the Buckinghamshire innings of 364, but it is probable that White was nursing an injury that prevented him from bowling.
