Needing just 41 runs to win after Wiltshire followed on 131 behind, Monmouthshire lost six wickets for 22 before winning by three wickets shortly before 3.30 pm on the second day. The margin of victory was the narrowest of the season by a team successfully chasing a fourth innings target. Rain delayed the start until 12.30 pm on the second day. For the winners, Silverlock took 12 wickets in the match for 121 runs, including 7 for 42 in the Wiltshire first innings. Mayes top-scored with 56 including 1 five and 6 fours. In the Monmouthshire first innings Mayes and Deane added 62 for the seventh wicket, and Steeples and Phillips 87 for the last wicket. The latter was the highest partnership for that wicket during the season and a new Championship record, exceeding the 71 put on by Dr A V Macgregor and G Middlemiss for Durham against Cambridgeshire at West Hartlepool in 1897.
It was to be equalled later in the season by G Polley and C Headlam playing for Oxfordshire against Buckinghamshire at Aylesbury.
Mayes stumped three batsmen in the Wiltshire second innings, which was the most in an innings during the season and equalled the record for the Championship achieved in earlier seasons by W H Brain for Glamorgan, and by C E Cobb -- three times - F W Dobson and C D Robinson all for Buckinghamshire. For the losers, Overton took 10 wickets in the match for 88 runs, and Smart top-scored with 46 not out. After the fall of the ninth wicket in the Monmouthshire first innings, the players moved to leave the field but before they reached the pavilion Phillips appeared on the scene and the Wiltshire captain generously allowed the innings to continue. Without that record breaking tenth-wicket partnership of 87 runs, it is unlikely that Monmouthshire would have won the match.
