This card comes from the Minor Counties Research Project - research is continuing on this scorecard which can be expected to change.
Wiltshire won this match by 12 runs, which was the closest run margin of the season. Set to score 181 runs for victory, a win for the visitors looked on the cards during a successful partnership between Marsh and Smith, but the remaining batsmen made limited contributions against the bowling of W R R Smith and Smart. Marsh scored 56. For Wiltshire, Miller scored 56. Moulder had been playing cricket in Kent and did not receive his written invitation to play until returning to Oxford late on the Monday evening. The Wiltshire Times reported that "A most offensive odour was wafted across the field from some piggeries close by, which were apparently being cleaned out. On Monday afternoon the stench was so bad that Gladwin, the visiting umpire, was too unwell to resume his duties on Tuesday." There were transmission problems in sending the score to the Oxford newspapers, so this version assumes that the Wiltshire sources are more reliable. When dismissing Marsh in the Oxfordshire first innings, Smart took his one hundredth wicket in championship matches. During the Oxfordshire second innings, both W Smith, when he had scored 28, and A Rogers when 3, reached the career milestone of one thousand runs in championship matches.
