This card comes from the Minor Counties Research Project - research is continuing on this scorecard which can be expected to change.
This return match was drawn, with stumps being drawn at 6.00 pm to allow the visitors to catch an earlier train. The match between the two sides in July at Stoke-on-Trent had been won by Staffordshire. The Nottinghamshire declaration left Staffordshire a victory target of 205 runs to win in an hour and a quarter. A shower drove the players off the field during the second Nottinghamshire innings in the afternoon when the fourth wicket fell and tea was taken. For Nottinghamshire, there were 14 fours, 11 threes and 12 twos in Whysall's 140, an innings of 3½ hours. In the Nottinghamshire first innings, Whysall and Lymbery added 58 runs for the seventh wicket. For Staffordshire, Hollowood's 97, an innings of 2 hours and 50 minutes, included 9 fours, 3 threes and 7 twos. The three catches held by Stapleton in the Staffordshire first innings were the joint highest by a wicket-keeper with five others. During the Nottinghamshire second innings before a wicket had fallen, James was hit on the hand and retired hurt. He resumed his innings at the fall of the fourth wicket. It was estimated that around a thousand spectators were present on the first day and 'a few hundred' on the second.
