Staffordshire won this match by an innings and 52 runs. The match between the two sides at Jesmond in June had been won by Durham. For Staffordshire Nichols scored 118, his first century for the county, which contained 12 fours. Fereday hit 6 fours in his 91 and these two added 142 for the fifth wicket, a county record against Northumberland. Nichols and Vost added 66 runs for the seventh wicket.
The Staffordshire innings lasted 4½ hours. Heath took 6 wickets for 56 runs in Northumberland's second innings on his debut. For Northumberland Cumberlege was the top scorer with 28.
