In the first ever match between these two sides, Kent won by 98 runs at 4 pm on the second day. In their first innings there were 6 fours in Powell's 76 not out, the only half-century of the match, whilst Hamilton-Fletcher top-scored for Dorset with 25 in their second innings. Cummins took 5 wickets for 48 runs in Kent's first innings. During lunch on the second day, Jennings heard that his mother had died and Goodden took his place in the field.
