In the Queensland Colts second innings, with the total at 103 Bracken began his twelfth over by trapping Poole lbw and followed with the wickets of Noffke and Pascoe in the next two balls to achieve a hat trick. New South Wales 136 in arrears and began their innings at 2.39 p.m. They were soon in trouble with both openers back in the dressing room and only fourteen runs on the board. A titanic struggle loomed. Higgs now joined Rummans and was soon into his stride. Higgs took to the Queensland bowlers with relish and victory was achieved at 4.42pm after the innings had been in progress for one hour and three quarters, quite a turn around from the slow batting witnessed earlier in the day. Times and balls to record each 50 runs of the wicket partnerships not recorded in the score book. As a result of their victory New South Wales regained possession of the Sydney Gregory Cup which they had lost so decisively in Brisbane in December 1995.
